Geita is a town in Tanzania, located 90 kilometers west of Mwanza. Geita first came into prominence as the site of a German colonial gold mine. A German gold prospector was the first to discover the mineral in the hills surrounding modern-day Geita town in the early 1900s. Germany ceded control of its colonies to the British after defeat in World War I. By mid to late 1990’s Geita regained its prominence when the Tanzanian government opened the mineral sector to foreign investment. The Geita Gold Mine is Tanzania’s largest gold producer. The city has a small airport as well named as Geita Mine Airport. The airport is just 9kms from Geita. The airport serves the city with large number of visitors every year.
