Limerick, the principal city in County Limerick, is the third largest city in the Republic of Ireland. The city is situated on several curves and islands of the River Shannon. Limerick is one of the constituent cities of the Cork-Limerick-Galway corridor that has a population of 1 million. The most primitive settlement in the city, Inis Sibhtonn, was the original name for King’s Island during the pre-Viking and Viking eras. The city was redesigned in the 12th century by Normans and added much of the most notable architecture, like King John’s Castle and St Mary’s Cathedral. The city played a key role during the civil wars of the 17th century. By late 18th century, the city grew rich through trade. Shannon Airport, located 20 km west of the city in County Clare, is the airport that serves the city with number of flights to Limerick everyday.
